Situated on the Indo-China peninsula, Thailand has a time-honoredand friendly relationship with China. They are good neighbors and thetwo peoples enjoy frequent exchanges. Throughout history, Chinesepeople began to go to Thailand and conducted cultural and economiccommunications with Thai people since1258. At that time, many Chinesepeople immigrated to Thailand, and gradually received both Thai andChinese Culture. Through thousands of years’ cultural baptism andintegration, it is now quite difficult to distinguish the local Thai peoplefrom Chinese people in Thailand. With the sustained and rapid growth ofChinese economy, the exchanges in politics, economy and culturebetween the two countries become more and more frequent in recentyears. What’s more, an emerging “Mandarin Fever” appears in Thailand,and Chinese language teaching gradually gains more attention from Thaigovernment and non-governmental agencies. An increasing number ofschools start to establish Chinese courses; at the same time, more Chineseteachers especially those local ones are in great demand.Because local Chinese teachers are the main force of the worldChinese language teaching, and greatly promote the sustained spread anddevelopment of Chinese. Hence, the researches on the current situationand problems of local Chinese teachers in Thailand will help to improve their professional competence, cultivate high qualified and specializedteachers, and develop pragmatic Chinese teaching materials andmethodology in accordance with Thai condition.This paper mainly conducts researches on various problemsemerging in the process of the professional development of local primaryand middle school Chinese teachers in the Second District of Bangkok bymeans of philology and questionnaire method, based on which, somemeasures aiming to improve these teachers’ professional ability will beproposed.The paper consists of the following five parts:The first part, as an introduction, mainly presents the background,purposes, significance, content and methods of this research.The second one makes a brief introduction of the background of theprofessional development of local Chinese teachers in Thailand, andfurther analyzes the basic condition of the education system and localChinese teachers in Bangkok, which will lay a solid foundation for abetter study of the professional development of these teachers.The third part primarily conducts a deep investigation and researchon45local Chinese teachers in the Second District of Bangkok throughavailable documents and questionnaire surveys, so as to have anall-around knowledge of the basic education condition, currentprofessional development of local Chinese teachers. The last but one, problems emerging during the process of theprofessional development of local Chinese teachers have been pointed outand analyzed, besides, the reasons are also investigated.The last part proposes corresponding countermeasures for promotinglocal Chinese Teachers’ professional development based on deep analysisand discussions.
