The1920s witnessed the great change of American history. It is known as the“Roaring Twenties”, or so-called” Jazz Age”. Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald(1896-1940)has long been viewed as the spokesman of the seemingly prosperous1920s.Fitzgerald’s literary reputation is mainly associated with his status as the laureate ofthe “Lost Generation” and with his description of the wild young people in his worksof the1920s. The Great Gatsby has long been treated as the masterpiece ofFitzgerald. Fitzgerald captured the characteristics of that age through The GreatGatsby.This dissertation treat The Great Gatsby as a target to examine thecharacteristics of the Lost Generation..By using the concept of “Unreliable Narrator”,this thesis aim to explore the theme of lostness and the characteristics of fuzzynarration.of The Great Gatsby.In the frist part, I took a briefly literature review on The Great Gatsby.Andintroduced the concept of “Unreliable Narrator”.The second part, It mainly introduced the historical background of The1920s.It aimed to discuss the relationship between the writings of Fitzgerald and the lostGeneration.The third part,. It mainly discuss the characteristics of fuzzy narration andthe theme of lostness. Detailed reading was conducted by using the concept“Unreliable narrator”.
