Foreign students-targeted Chinese textbooks, as major teaching materials, contain the basic knowledge of Chinese phonetics, vocabulary and grammar. Their qualities directly affect students’ current and future learning of the various Chinese courses. Focusing on8texts of similar topics selected from two teaching materials, this paper will make a comparative study between "Hanyu Jiaocheng" and "Intensive Elementary Chinese Course" based on three aspects—vocabulary, grammar and exercises.In terms of vocabulary, the paper will deal with in the selected texts by comparing the amount of new words, the similarities and differences of new word entries, and exegeses in three aspects. Initially, the writer will analyze the differences in quantities and the cause of such differences. Then, the writer will try to find out new words in the same entries and different entries. At last, the writer will analyze the exegeses of the selected texts from two aspects:the method and the content.In grammar part, the paper mainly compares the selection and the exegeses. On one hand, it analyzes the similarities and differences of grammatical items. On the other hand, by comparing and analyzing the exegeses of the similar grammatical items, it will try to find out the features of these exegeses.As for the exercises, the paper will focus on the density and intensity of the exercises in the selected texts. The main point will be the analyses of similarities and differences. In the end, according to the above comparisons and analyses, the paper will give some feasible suggestions on the compilations of foreign students-targeted Chinese textbooks.
