Coined in the concept of "image", city image theory was born. The framework of Xi’an is constituted by roads, borders, districts, nodes and landmarks, yet its substance contains its society, culture, customs and well-known figures. As a necessary part of this city’s cultural industry, city movie is a form of popular culture, leading the tide of culture, transferring the ideology of mainstream, and it is a mass media, recording the growth of a city and satisfying the needs of people’s beauty appreciation.The specialty of the city image in Xi’an forms the particularity of its movie culture. There are three aspects to figure out its aesthetic features and to discover how to explain its city image by movies——history, scenes and humanity. Movies made from historical view can highlight its historic significance as well as its epic and era aesthetic characteristics; images like borders and landmarks in scenes part decide the audio-visual aids and image styles; figures, foods, local opera music and dialects in humanity aspect build the theme and ethos.Although Xi’an has advantages in its cultural resources and geographical localization, it does not play a significant role in today’s Chinese city movies. As a result, it is worthwhile to take lessons from cities like Beijing, Nanjing and Chongqing.In the new era, the condition of city movie is facing both opportunities and challenges. It is meaningful for Xi’an to take the following actions to spread its city images and advance its city movies:Firstly, unite cultural resources in a large scale, and explore city spirits deeply; Secondly, discover movie themes in various ways, and construct the movie system artistically; Thirdly, optimize and update the industry structure, pay attention to cultivate technical personals in film field; Fourthly, keep pace with the time to promote the medium integration, build a brand of its own city movie.
