Mendelssohn, who is an important composer at the early romantic period in Europe, has not been objective and profound understanding in the history of western piano development. Researches are still need to be done on some of his masterpieces. In this thesis, different methods, which include musical form, structure, texture, motivation, mood and other aspects, will be done on three of Mendelssohn’s piano caprices(op.5 op.14 and op.33). By analyzing and comparing those caprices, the differences and commonalities of Mendelssohn piano capriccio in different periods of music style will be shown and thus deepen the thought and cognition of Mendelssohn piano music. In performance terms, the comprehensive and profound analysis is also made in these three caprices, which includes difficulty when playing grasp, playing skills, pedal, touch keys and tone control. These caprices comprehensively reflect refined musical language of Mendelssohn, vivid and rigorous musical structure, and beautiful and modest technical characteristics. Those works contain important implications in understanding and managing other piano masterpieces of Mendelssohn.
