With the development of the city and the improvement of people’s living standard, the needof production, the demand of water resource quantity and quality is increasing. Since the21stCentury, the water problem has attracted the attention of society, and has become a world-wideproblem. In order to solve the major problems related to people’s living, sea water desalinationproject develops quickly. Reverse osmosis desalination technology has become the most commontechnology of desalination, because of the development of membrane manufacturing, thereduction of energy consumption and its high efficiency. But the RO system is very complex andof large scale, if error occurs, the system will suffer huge losses. Therefore, guaranteeing thenormal, safe and efficient operation is necessary in engineering.Take the100,000t/d membrane desalination system as the background, the RO membranewhich is the key component as the key object, this subject systematically studied the workingprinciple of RO desalination system and the fault mechanism of the core component. For thisreason, if just rely on single method and neglect the importance of the underlying mechanism ofbasic research, it’s unable to meet the application requirements of intelligent fault diagnosis forRO desalination system. Thus, on the basis of the study on the generation mechanism,characterization of form, parameters and failure mode and effects analysis(FMEA), the subjectstudies the construction and algorithm of fault tree. By using the rough set theory, the paperestablishes the logical fault tree for the fault signals, describes the relationship between the eventsof fault and reasons for the incident, and then realizes the complementary combination technologywith fault knowledge acquisition and expression. Fault tree analysis(FTA) and rough set(RS)theory are two methods for system fault diagnosis that can complement with each other andconfirm each other. By building a right fault tree reasonably and combining the two approaches,fault diagnosis of RO desalination system can be achieved. And the system will restore the normaloperation quickly, after the diagnosis results and the timely repairing.At last, the knowledge base and reasoning machine of fault diagnosis expert system areanalyzed and interpreted. A fault diagnosis expert system for RO desalination engineering basedon.NET is developed according to the research of RS theory and FTA, which laid a foundationfor the development of desalination engineering.
