For the past few years, for answering the country’s need, the exploitation of west area growing fast like a raging fire. How to overcome unfavorable geological conditions in southwestern mountain area while engineering practice became a requisite problem an engineer need to be faced with. As is known to all, the red mudstone that widely distributed in Sichuan region is mainly formed during Jurassic and Cretaceous two geological periods and was bad at physical performance. Moreover, scientifically evaluate and engineeringly utilize the red mudstone within the region not only save massive amount of project fund but also minimizes the amount of filler and times of replacements, thus protect geological environment of mountainous areas.Proceeding research on red-mud stone in Si Chuan area is meaningful. For this reason, this paper use ArcGIS platform studies the build-embankment behaviors of red-mudstone in Sichuan region zonally based on powerful GIS technique. In addition to the guiding significance for roadbed filling material choosing in constructing highway and railway in Sichuan region, the research method and conclusion also provide theoretical basis for constructing railway, highway, hydropower and mine industry in red mudstone area. Discriminant matrix constructed by the AHP method, the weights for each evaluation factor given, and a consistency test was carried out. In red mudstone layer of road evaluation, with the aid of GIS in data storage, processing, analysis, calculation and statistical aspects of the power of the weights of evaluation factors maps overlay analysis, based on the datum of the multi-level operation, mapped the red bed mudstone in sichuan area road use evaluation based on the way to evaluate the use of the maps.In this paper, red-mudstone in Sichuan area was portioned into the southwest of north area, middle area, east area and Panxi four basins. Analyzing the material composition of the red bed mudstone, discuss red layer of engineering environment characteristics in the study area, illustrates the red bed mudstone with poor physical and mechanical performance. In ArcGIS 10.1 software platform, on the basis of evaluation of the maps, divided the study area and the partition with red mudstone layer of road grade level and its distribution on the location. In addition, the statistical analysis of the study area and the different degree of road use sex partition area and proportion. Lastly taking traffic demand as the background the concept of "contribution rate" is put forward by analyzing the research area and the existing traffic and future planning traffic line mileage,which further shows that the evaluation results of the red mudstone road usability in Sichuan area have good engineering application value.This research conclutions has certain guiding significance on the selection of subgrade filling material during the highway and railway construction in Sichuan area. It also provides some theoretical basis for the engineering construction on the red mudstone area.
