With the development of market demand, the products are becoming more complicated, but the production cycle of the product are becoming shorter. Therefore, the request for the manufacturing becomes higher and higher. In recent years, to adapt to the above requirements, turn-milling machine tool has developed more and more quickly. Only needs once fixture, it can complete all processing operations of the parts. Therefore, it greatly improves production efficiency. However, the research on the turn-milling machine tool requires a lot of design schemes and experimental analyses. Thus the research needs a lot of business costs and long development cycle.Virtual prototyping technology is a new design method, using this design method the cost of machine tool’s design can be reduced, and the research cycle can also be shortened.Based on virtual prototyping technology, in this article the virtual prototype model of the turn-milling machine tool is built, then the kinematic and dynamic characteristics of the machine tool are analyzed, and the dynamic characteristic of the machine tool spindle and the function of the NC machining are also studied and simulated. The main research contents of the article are as follows:(1) The characteristics of the machine tool’s overall structure are researched and the overall design scheme of the machine tool is established. The refined design of the machine tool’s every part is realized, and the virtual prototype model of the machine tool is also built.(2) The kinematics characteristics of the machine tool are studied. The interference detection, kinematics and inverse kinematics solution of the virtual prototype are studied, and the change curves of all guide rails’ movement are obtained. All the solutions lay the foundation for the subsequent analysis.(3) The multi-rigid-body model and rigid-flexible-body coupling model are established. Dynamic characteristics of the machine tool are researched based on both model, and the values and change rules of the force for all guide rails’ drive motors are obtained. Compared the analysis results, the results of the rigid-flexible-body coupling model are closer to the real physical prototype. The results can provide reference for the selection of the motor during the machine tool design process.(4) The dynamic characteristics of the spindle which is the key component of the machine tool are analyzed with ANSYS12.0, contained the modal analysis and the harmonic response analysis. The vibration characteristics and dynamic stiffness of the spindle are obtained. The results can provide important reference for the optimization of the structure of the spindle during the machine tool design process.(5) The geometric model of the machine tool for simulation NC machining is built based on VERICUT6.2, and then the NC program for the CNC machining is imported. Finally, the simulation and analysis of turning and milling function of the machine tool are researched and realized.
