At present, diffraction efficiency of holographic material is a hot spot in the field of holography technique, and its research will certainly influence the development of holography technique. Based on a general research on the development of holography technique and diffraction efficiency of holographic material, in this study, we investigated the mechanism of the diffraction efficiency of silver halide gelatin and DCG by calculating and experimenting.Firstly, we modified the formula amended by guowei Tang in order to connect the formula with the physical parameters that will directly affect the diffraction efficiency of reflection hologram which is made using DCG. Analysis of computations showed adequacy of the used model for improvement. The formula can be used to measure the diffraction efficiency of reflection hologram and offer a strong means for studying the diffraction efficiency of reflection hologram.Secondly, we made transmission holograms using silver halide gelatin, measured their diffraction efficiency, calculated their spatial frequency. Analysis of computations and experimental results showed that the diffraction efficiency of transmission hologram is determined by spatial frequency, while the diffraction efficiency changes with the changing of the angle of incidence. The results infer that the spatialfrequency has nothing to do with the position of spherical wave and the attribute of reference beam and object beam.We also investigated the surface morphology of the transmission hologram using AFM, the result is not the same as the conclusion that has been got by calculating, therefore another new question is put forward.
