SiC particle reinforced aluminum metal matrix composites (SiCp/Al) have many excellent mechanical and physical properties such as high specific strength, resistant wear, resistant corrosion, low thermal coefficient of expansion, low density, high micro-yield strength, resistant radiation, favorable dimensional stability, and so on. It will be increasingly used in many fields such as aeronautics and astronautics, weapon, automobile and electron and so on.However, SiCp/Al is a typical difficult to machine material, and its bad machining property makes its commercialization far failed to reach people's expectations. The existence of reinforcement SiCp with high hardness brings great difficulties to the machining of this kind of material. Its serious tool-wear and high machining cost lead to the low machining efficiency and machining surface finish, which has become the tough problem that impedes the widely use of this advanced material. So it is necessary to propose a new efficient machining method. In view of the machining situation of SiCp/Al, this paper made an experimental study on it with mill-grinding method, which focuses on the effect of process parameter to the material removal rate and mill-grinded surface quality. Initially, based on Taguchi method, a preliminary study on the effect progression and degree of the process parameter was made on the material removal rate using electroplated diamond grinding wheel. Then a detail study was made on the effect relationship which caused by process parameter and the size of diamond to removal ratio through single factor experiment. Finally, the effect on surface roughness of speed rate and material removal rate was studied, and mill-grinded surface was scanned by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and the characteristics of these surfaces were analyzed.Research results show that the mill-grinding method can achieve the efficient removal of SiCp/Al. It is an effective method to process the SiCp/Al.
