Compared with the traditional concept of product assembly, virtual assembly technology has many advantages, such as shortening products’ development cycle, improving products’ quality and reducing products’ cost and so on. In recent years, virtual assembly technology has been widely used and developed in the products manufacturing field, especially in the design and assembly process of small quantities of mechanical and electrical products. The key technologies of virtual assembly consist of assembly modeling, collision detection and path planning, in which path planning is the crucial content. In order to improve the ability of rapidity and high efficiency of path planning, this paper carried out the research that based on partition of unity of virtual assembly path planning for the components don’t require precise collision. The main contents are as follows:Do analysis of the open-source geometric kernel architecture belong to Open CASCADE and divide the bounding box; Proposed the idea of module development based on the bounding box technology and space division technology aim to AABB hierarchical bounding box and octree space division method.Introduce the principle of path planning algorithm which is the unit decomposition method of bounding box; Put forward the path planning algorithm based on the shaft holes and surface fitting parts to realize automatic path planning due to constraints recognition and based on bounding box and other path panning. The experiment has been done for constraint recognition path planning of two parts components and the simulation of bounding box path panning based on the VAS virtual assembly system which has developed the path planning module, and the experiment verified the accuracy and the efficiency of automatic path panning.
