Double flank meshing measurement(DFM) is a kind of simple, widely used gear metrology. It can be used for rapid error detection at gear production line. However, it was not easy to purchase this instrument for the transmission gear shaft parts directly both here and abroad. Because of the specialties of its multiple gears to be checked simultaneously, it’s a feasible solution to develop a double flank meshing instrument for gear shaft.In this paper, by the opportunity of checking instrument project for gear shaft, double flank meshing gear metrology theories and relative technologies were systematically studied.And the proprietary intellectual property rights automatic double flank meshing gear shaft checking instrument was developed according to the process requirement. the main work of this paper is as follows.1. The system definition and the main mechanical design for the instrument were completed. First, key parameters, such as static characteristics and measuring bandwidth for the instrument, were inferentially defined according to the requirement of the gear shaft checking process. Then logical system and flexible model principle drawings were made. Thereafter measuring gear base spring was analyzed and designed based on the measurement bandwidth defined above. The mechanical structures were desiged at last.2. The control and measuring system(CMS) for the instrument was developed. Based on the analysis of the measuring requirement, CMS architecture was designed. And servo strategy of pulse position control was studied for the gear driving. The related PLC technologies were studied especially for data acquisition triggering. The proper inductive displacement sensors were selected accordingly. And signal condition and data acquisition systems were designed accordingly.3. The measuring software was developed. Based on the pre-defined software functions and the software environment, system design of the soft, such as data flow analysis, database structure design, was carried out. Key algorithms for measuring and calculations were sorted out in use of arrow diagram. The measuring software was designed accordingly.4. The studies based on experiments were carried out on the instrument. The accuracies for both the geometry and linearity of measuring system were checked. The influence of the servo motor to measuring system was also studied. The measuring repeatability index was calculated in accordance with the popular measurement system analysis requirement in automobile industry. The checking result comparation between the instrument and other instrument was done for confirming the correctness.Base on the above works, the useable double flank meshing instrument for gear shaft was completed. The accuracies and functions of the instrument demostrated this instrument met the original design requirements. And especially good repeatability and accuracy on measuring the measurement over balls were also shown by the experiments.
