| Wood sculpture is one of the representative taditional style of China folk art, which have lots of taditional culture background and obvious ethnic flavor. Wood is a container of the wood sculpture art. And in some degree, all kinds of woods can be used to culpture but it dosen’t means every of them can be a competitive products. According to the history of traditional wood sculpture, paper choosed 13 species woods which concludes 11 kinds of classic furnishing wood sculpture material and 2 kinds of newly developing material. Paper take a system study on microstructure, structure property, material characteristics, essential oil of wood, and also analysed the suitable between the material and sculpture, discussing the material how to effect the wood carving craft, carving skill and decoration aesthetics. For the same time,the microstructure and wood classify of Xuelongmu(Agathis spp.) and Zitanliu(Dalbergia spp.)have been studied. The conclusions are below:(1)The structure of wood is an important factor that affect the material choice during sculpturing. The material of main furnishing wood sculpture is mostly softwood that gradual transition from earlywood to latewood and hardwood that diffuse-porous. The description we give of macro and microstructure of these wood is a reference for sculpture choice. For addition,the study on structure shows that Xuelongmu is Agathis spp. And Zitanliu is probably Dalbergia spp., which needs a further study on their flower, fruit and leaf to make a clear result.(2)Study with sculpture skill and method shows wood with different structure suit for different art piece. Material with straight texture, fine structure, for instance, Buxus microphylla,Tilia tuan, suit for openwork sculpture and circular engravure. Material with cross texture,medium structure, for instance,cinnamumom camphora, Pterocarpus santalinus, suit for circular engravure adding with bas relief.(3)The PCA to microstructure of wood shows that the primary factors influencing sculpture performance are even tangential-radial diameter of vessel lumina, length of fiber, ratio of cell wall to cavity. Whether pulling cut or pushing carve, operator should avoid cutting a vessel into parts, namely do not cut parallel to grain. Cut along the direction cross the texture could provid more resistance that make oprator better controlled. When length of the fiber of wood is short and vessle average spreaded, the sculpture could be easier.(4)The study on variation of parameter L*,a*,b*,VC and H shows that 7 of them are in the zone of yellow(Y). 5 of them are in the zone of orange(YR). 1 of them is in the zone of red(R).GZL of those samples are between 5.15% to 9.32%, while GZT are between 3.94% to 6.12%.For water contact angles are below 90°, these materials are all belong to semi-wet ability material. The smaller the contact angle is, the better wet ability the material have. Material with yellow color and medium shine property suit for lively, vivily theme sculpture. While materialwith red color and shine suit for steady, graceful, generous sculpture.(5)The study shows that the choice for sculpture is related to wood’s density, hardness and dry shrinkage. Materials with medium hardness and medium density, like Ginkgo biloba,Tillia sp.,Cinnamomum camphora etc., suit for all kinds of sculpture styles and usually with tools with thin and sharp blade. While Materials with high hardness and high density, like Pterocarpus santalinus,Pterocarpus macarocarpus,Dalbergia bariensis etc., should be operated with hardwood sculpture skills. They mainly use thick blade to process and with the aid of wood file and scraper.(6)Analyze on essential oil component of 7 kinds of wood shows that chemical compound which contained more than 1% are:naphthalenemethanol,polyenes,phenol,13-Docosenamide,(Z)-,ketone,lipoid,etc.Chemical compound has an important effection on appreciation and work environment of wood sculpture... |
