This Paper is to study the possibility of biodegradation of Tricholoethylene (TCE) absorbed on granular activated carbon (GAC) and to determine the absorptive capacity of GAC treated by microorganisms. The microorganisms are phenol utilizing bacteria which are high active and low toxicity. The results indicates that when temperature is 30 centidegree and equilibrium adsorbent concentration is 30ppb, the equilibrium adsorbance of GAC is 3.2mg-TCE/g-GAC and the adsorption isotherm is according to Freundlich equation. In intermittent decomposing experiment, when the adsorbance of GAC is between 0.6 and 3.7 mg/g, the decomposing efficiency exceeds 80%. This indicates that phenol-bacteria by our own laboratory have high active for TCE. In continuous decomposing experiment, the decomposing efficiency exceeds 78%, which indicates that the toxicity of metabolic products is restrained effectively. The adsorptive capacity of the biodegraded GAC was very low compared to that new GAC. The reason is that metabolic product and obituary bacteria and other organic substance are absorbed by GAC and the GAC is jammed. Finally, the ideal condition of continuous decomposing experiment is discussed. The method of improving decomposing capacity is to improve the concentration and the active of phenol-bacteria. The ideal concentration of phenol-bacteria is also calculated, which is 2720 mg/i.
