In modern continuous casting industry, breakout is a significant factor to decrease productivity and the useful life of metallurgical equipments. To reduce the breakout rate in casting and to make the breakout prediction have been the crucial research topics in metallurgy. Based on the research of characteristics of mould friction in frequency-domain , a method is put forward to make prediction of breakout and a system is established . In this paper, firstly, the mould friction derived from measuring the power of mould oscillation motor is filtered; and then is transfered by FFT to get the frequency-domain characteristics. Further analysis is made on the effects that the oscillator brings to mould friction, furthermore, a resolution is proposed. Amplitude spectrum and power spectrum are chosen to make further research on breakout , and changes of these measures are analyzed whenever breakout happens, so that the breakout frequency-region model is built. In order to describe the relation between mould friction and breakout precisely ,the concept of breakout probability is brought up. In the end of this paper, a software design of the system to make prediction of breakout in mould friction is presented. The system is tested with the real data sampled from BaoShan Steel Co, Ltd, and proved to be effective on most breakouts.
