Flame brominated retardants (BFRs) are substances used in plastics, textiles, electronic circuitry and other materials to prevent fires. Some of the technical flame retardantproducts contain brominated organic compounds including polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD), tetrabromobisphenol-A (TBBP-A) and polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs). Additives retardants include PBBs, PBDEs and HBCD. Others, such as TBBP-A are reactive retardant and are bound to the material chemically as additives retardants. TBBP-A is a kind of potential environment endocrine interference, similar with persistent organic pollutant (POPs). It can accumulate in the environment and biota, and have serious influence to the environment and the living creature. Therefore, the study of TBBP-A in environment and biota is an significant task.In this paper, methods for determination of TBBP-A in various environmental media were developed. A C18 clean-up procedure was developed for soil and sewage samples preparation. Recoveries were ranged from 58.49% to 97.60% for TBBP-A at five diferent spiked levels and the limit of detection (LOD) was 1 pg, with relative standard deviation (R.S.D) between 0.40% and 8.72%. Simultaneous determination of the TBBP-A in plant samples was developed with SPE. Recoveries for the LC-ESI-MS procedure ranged from 64.99% to 90.93% and the LOD was 5 pg, with relative standard deviation(R.S.D) between 2.75% and 9.13%. Water samples were enriched using a C18 solid-phase extraction. The detection limit of this method (10pg) was proved to be much better than reported previously. Recoveries were ranged from 57.53% to 95.16% with R.S.D between 0.14% and 4.96%. The results were shown that these methods are simple, accurate and suitable for identification and quantification of TBBP-A in soil, sewage sludge, plant and water samples. Finally, on the base of this analytical method, soil, sewage sludge and paints samples were first investigated, then we detected the water samples in Beijing district. The levels of TBBP-A in soil and sewage were n.d62.68 ng/g and 0.14-92.17 ng/g,respectively, the level of TBBP-A in plants was n.d~ 996.60 ng/g, and the level of TBBP-A in water systerm was n.d~1.91 ng/L.
