High speed machining(HSM) is one of the main development directions of Advanced Manufacturing Technology nowadays.Tool system is an important component of high speed machine tool,of which the structure and connection performance affect the quality and efficiency of HSM.KM(an abbreviation of Kenna Metal) tool holder and its tool system,having the advantages of small dimension,high stiffness and positioning accuracy,fast installation and simple maintenance have been widely used in HSM field.So it has theoretical and practical significance to carry out basic study on KM tool-holder and its tool system.Based on the overview and analyses of the new tool systems at home and broad, the structure and connection performance of KM tool holder and its tool system have been systematically studied in this paper.The primary contributions of this paper were listed as follows:1.Deeply analyzing the structural characteristics of KM tool system and its fastening principle,illustrating connotation of unique structure about the KM toolholder, which can provide theoretical basis for the building of the tool system finite element model as well as the numerical simulation work.2.After analyzing the mechanical model for KM tool-holder/spindle interface system based on theoretical in plastoelasticity,the conclusion that there being gaps between the coupling systems can be obtained under effect of centrifugal force. Binding interference joint theoretical model at static state or high rotation speed,the magnitude of interference between the KM tool-holder and spindle was investigated. All this can provide theoretical basis for future numerical simulation work.3.Not only simulating the radial deformation of KM tool-holder and spindle at high rotation speed,but also by changing factors such as interference,clamping force, rotation speed and etc,the effects of different parameters to the performance of spindle/tool-holder connection system were researched with finite element method. Based on the above work,the proper range of parameters was given.4.Establishing the face contact mechanical model of KM tool system,deducing the limited bending moment equation under the status of tool holder and spindle separation,which would provide theoretical method for using KM tool holder correctly.By changing factors such as bending moment,interference,clamping force, rotation speed and etc,the effects of different parameters to the radial stiffness of toolholder/spindle connection system were researched with finite element method.The research results enrich design theories of tool system in HSM and it was also expected that the results could be used as theoretical basis and technical guide for application of KM tool shank,as well as develop a new type tooling system with the autonomous intellectual property right in HSM.
