Electric arc furnace, being an important modern steelmaking equipment, has been widely used in the metal smelting industry due to its excellent performance and outstanding cost-effectiveness. However, electric arc furnace brings more serious damage to the power grid load. Firstly, based on output characteristics, loss characteristics and the response speed, TCR and TSC are compared with STATCOM, which is based on converter. Secondly, considering its characteristics, the combination of TSC+STATCOM compensation device is selected to inhibit the adverse effects of electric arc furnace.STATCOM has better performance and TSC is lower cost are discovered. Part of the STATCOM capacity is replaced by TSC, the overall dynamic performance is ensured and the cost of the device is reduced. The reactive power reserves control strategy is adopted to the TSC+STATCOM. The reactive power fluctuation and voltage adjustment of electric arc furnace are compensated by TSC+STATCOM. The reactive power compensation of system can be mainly compensated by TSC. The remaining reactive power reserve is accurately controlled by the STATCOM, meanwhile, the slow control of reactive power compensation and excellent dynamic characteristics are guaranteed. So a new steady state of the system can be quickly obtained in the reactive power disturbance, meanwhile, enough reactive power is reserved to cope with the impact of reactive power next time.The improvement of control techniques is the most stable, economical and effective means in improving power system operation. In this paper, the theory of fuzzy control is carried out in TSC switching control. Based on dynamic energy function, a nonlinear robust controller is designed for the STATCOM, which plays a major role in the system. Analysis showed that the nonlinear robust controller has better good closed-loop stability, and make a reference in solving practical engineering problems.
