With the development of wind power generation, the grid-connected wind farms bring voltage and reactive power problems to power system, such as the stability of wind farms and the security of power grid. Reactive power compensation is an important technology to improve electric power quality. Installing the typical parallel compensation device, wind farms can absorb and issue continuously adjustable reactive power. Then, the wind power absorption ability of power grid will improve in a large degree.This paper analyzes various influences and reasonable arrangement for wind farm reactive compensation capacity. For the inconsistent requirements in design regulations and influence factors for transmission line losses, studied through analysis and calculation. At the same time, the configuration scheme for total compensation capacity, configuration methods for dynamic compensation devices and grouping mode for capacitor branches are also given. The feasibility of compensation capacity configuration scheme is verified by multiple wind farm calculation cases.Static var compensator (SVC) is a commonly used reactive power compensation device in wind farm. Then, a wind farm simulation platform is established by reference to the actual system parameters. In detailed consideration of real-time operation requirements and wind farm compensation equipment conditions, the coordinated control strategy for capacitor branches and SVC is put forward. Simulation results demonstrate that coordinated control strategy can restrain wind farm voltage problem obviously.Considering wind farms’ adjustment demand, a voltage and reactive power coordinated control strategy for STATCOM has been proposed in this paper, which can balance the needs of voltage regulation and power factor control target. Besides, a pre-switching method for capacitor is given. This method can avoid reactive power impulsion and frequently switch. By studying reactive power distribution of dynamic compensation devices on different lines, balance the bus voltage, and make full use of the STATCOM capacity.
