Objective:To observe the clinical effect of electro-acupuncture on acupoints Shenshu and Huiyang on Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) and to observe and evaluate the results.Methods:61 patients with BPH were randomly divided into a treatment group(31 cases treated by electro-acupuncture)and a control group (30 cases treated by medication). The treatment group underwent two courses of treatment and the control group underwent one course of treatment. Before and after treatment observations were made regarding IPSS, BS ratings, maximum urine flow rate changes, and residual urine volume. Statistical analysis of changes in the two groups was performed and the curative effects were compared. Changes in blood, urine and kidney function were observed before and after treatment. Results:The total effectiveness rate was 96.8% for the treatment group, and 86.7% for the control group. Both treatments improved IPSS, BS, Qmax, and Ru values in BPH patients. IPSS and BS values in the treatment group were significantly better than in the control group (P<0.05). Changes in Ru and Qmax values were significantly better in the treatment group than in the control group (P<0.05). Both groups of patients showed no abnormalities in blood, urine, and stool samples, and heart, liver, and kidney examinations. Conclusion:Treatment group BPH patients, when compared to control group patients, showed significantly improved IPSS and BS values, maximum urine flow rates, and reduced residual urine amounts.
