Objective:To know current psychiatric training, knowledge of and attitude toward mental illness in clinicians and nurses in Township Health Centers of Liuyang. Find out weaknesses and make suggestions to intervention to improve mental health service.Methods:All clinicians and nurses of the 37 Township Health Centers of Liuyang to facilitate sampling, the day of nursing staff in the post survey.Reference to foreign research based, case plus related issues discussed by the research group of experts, the use of five cases of mental illness, mental health and mental health knowledge questionnaire, the spirit of diseases of the attitude questionnaire, self general, psychiatric training conditions and preferences, antidepressants, and local and other psychiatric conditions known to the respondents conducted a questionnaire survey. The use of descriptive, univariate and muitivariate analysis of statistical methods to analyze data.Results:There are 1610 clinicians and nurses in all the 37 Township Health Centers of Liuyang,771 questionnaires were valid. More than 85% of cases, subjects could recognize the "psychological problems", the highest rate of correct diagnosis of mania, schizophrenia (negative symptoms in) minimum.There are 441 (57.3%) subjects do not know any depressants,164 (21.2%) do not know any psychiatric clinic or hospital in local area. There are 487 (63.1%) subjects strongly or lightly willing to obtain psychiatric training. The one with lower scores of Mental illness and Psychology Knowledge Questionnaire and Attitude toward Mental Illness questionnaire, are less likely with the willingness to obtain training. The most welcomed training is lectures together with manuals. The most wanted contains are prognosis and rehabilitation of mental illnesses, suicide prevention and diagnosis criteria of mental illnesses.Conclusions:Higher level of knowledge of mental health staff in Township Health Centers of Liuyang. The correct diagnosis of mental illness is higher. Their attitudes toward mental illness are negative. Most health care workers access to psychiatric knowledge and the desire strong. Liuyang City, township hospitals medical staffs attitude to mental illness needs to be improved. Trainings and interventions are needed to improve mental health service in Township Health Centers of Liuyang.
