Objectives(1) To know the job burnout status of staff in industries.(2) To compare the job burnout scores of staff in industries with different characters, know the character of staff's job bumout distribution and find the groups of people taken priority of others in job burnout prevention.(3) To evaluate the health status of the staff using the questionnaire of SF-36 and compare the quality of life of the staff with normative data of American resident and the townsman of Sichuan province of China.(4) Statistical methods of canonical correlation and hierarchical linear regression were used to explore the relationship of job burnout and quality of life and know the influence of job burnout that to the health of the staff of industries.Methods(1) Cluster random sampling method was used to select 1 894 staff in three state-owned industries.Questionnaires were administered to investigate the personal character, incomes, type of work, the status of job burnout and the quality of life.(2) Status of job burnout was measured by Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey and then statistical methods of z-test and One-way analysis of variance (one-way ANOVA) were used to explore the distribution character of job burnout for different group of people. The scale of Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey were translated and devised after measured in a small group of people and then the devised scale was used to evaluate the difference of scores of three scales of job burnout for staff with different sex, age, marital status, education attainment, professional rank and titles, family incomes per month and type of work.(3) Status of health were measured by the Medical Outcome Study 36-item short form health survey(SF-36).The values were replaced with the average scores of the left items if less than half of the items of each scale were missing, otherwise, the values were replaced with missing values. Methods of effect size and z-test were used to compare the quality of life of the staff with normative data of American residents and the townsman of Sichuan province of China.(4) Statistical methods of canonical correlation and hierarchical linear regression were used to explore the relationship of job burnout and quality of life.ResultsJob burnout was somewhat correlated with sex, age, marital status, education attainment, professional rank and titles, family incomes per month and type of work.Except for the scale of general health, the effect size of the other seven scales of SF-36 questionnaire, the mental component summary(MCS) and physical component summary(PCS) of the staff in industries were lower than 0.5,compared with that of normative data of American residents respectively; The scores of the scale of general health of the staff in industries were lower than that of normative data of American residents(P<0.01).Except for the scales of general health and body pain, the effect size of the other six scales of SF-36 questionnaire, the mental component summary (MCS) and physical component summary(PCS) of the staff in industries were lower than 0.5,compared with that of the townsman of Sichuan province of China respectively; The scores of the scale of body pain of the staff of the male and the staff of the female with the ages between 16 years old and 39 years old were lower than that of the townsman of Sichuan province of China(P<0.01).The more higher the scores of the scales of job burnout, the more higher the scores of the eight scales of the quality of life, the mental component summary and physical component summary.Emotional exhaustion was negatively associated with mental component summary. The predictive variables of physical component summary(PCS) were age, working in the produce line, emotional exhaustion and professional efficacy and the standard partial regression coefficients of the four variables were -0.119,-0.093,-0.274,-0.062 respectively(P<0.01).Age,working in the produce line, emotional exhaustion and professional efficacy predicted physical component summary negatively. The predictive variables of mental component summary were emotional exhaustion, cynicism and professional efficacy and the standard partial regression coefficients of the three scale of job burnout were -0.524,-0.107,-0.178(P<0.01).All the three scales of job burnout predicted the mental component summary negatively. Both to the physical component summary and the mental component summary, the most predictive variable was emotional exhaustion.ConclusionsAge and type of work were important influencing factors of job burnout. The young staff or staff in the produce line was more likely to have high scores in job burnout. The quality of life of the staff in industries was quite the same as that of normative data of American residents and the townsman of Sichuan province of China. Nevertheless, the staff evaluate more lowly of their general health than that of the American residents and their suffer more body pain than the general people. The influence of job burnout that to staff's health is great and job burnout was the important risk factor of factory staff's quality of life, especially influencing the staff's metal health significantly.Countermeasures, such as establishing varieties of entertainment equipments, carrying out psychological consultation and constructing more efficient administrative structure should be taken to eliminate the negative effect of job burnout to the staff's quality of life.
