Primary hypothyroidism is one of the most common endocrine diseases, and its main clinical feature is low basal metabolic rate, such as aversion to cold, cold limbs and fatigued spirit. As to the basic theory of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), it belongs to the category of "consumptive disease" or "edema", and treatment based on syndrome differentiation is often taken from Yang deficiency of the spleen and kidneys. According to relative literature and clinical experience, professor Gao Tianshu proposed that the main mechanism of primary hypothyroidism was not only Yang deficiency of the spleen and kidneys, but also included "depression of liver Qi" at the initial stage of the disease. From the clinical-pathological features of hypothyroidism, "deficiency syndrome" exists throughout the development of the disease. According to professor Gao's clinical experience, primary hypothyroidism can be classified into 3 stages: Liver Qi stagnation, deficiency of yang of spleen and deficiency of yang of kidney. Satisfied curative effect can usually be obtained with the combination of proper herbal prescription and small dose of thyroxin.
