Tan Yuanheng is a famous Hakka scholar and writer who has made great achievements both in studies of Hakka and in Hakka literary creation. Tan enjoys a unique image as a scholar as well as a writer in modern literary circles. As a Hakkanese,he has been profoundly nurtured by the Hakka culture. His novel The Spirit of Hakka enjoys distinctive features in characterization, customs description, cultural reflection and artistic innovation, and combines a scholar's sound rationality and profound cultural reflection with a writer's literary pursuit. Especially on portraying of the images of Hakka intellectual women, it creats those Hakka women as Qihui and Yuanqing who have great personality of a mother as well as the pursuit of consciousness of life, which is of great significance for the revealing of Hakka women's love and marrige. On the one hand, by the description of Hakka cultural customs in his The Spirit of Hakka, Tan Yuanheng observes the real life of Hakka and conducts self-introspection from this special perspective, which acts as a guiding role for the inheritance of Hakka culture. On the other hand, The Spirit of Hakka pioneers a new novel style which combines biographical novel and sub-ethnic group novel with educational novel. By adopting narrative pattern with time and space crisscross and idealpersonage characterization, the novel combines a scholar's ideal and a writer's sensibility to create a real parable, which overcomes modern scholars'common shortcomings in literary creation.
