This thesis explores the nature and function of onomatopoeia, and compareswith the ancient Chinese onomatopoeia and English onomatopoeia in partsof speech and pattern. The author collected many lively original materialsfrom contemporary literature work, made hundreds of cards and compiled aword-list of onomatopoeia which are often used. From comprehensiveanalysis , the author draws a conclusion that onomatopoeia is a kind oflanguage symbols. It is not adjective, not interjection, not adverb and notmood particle. It is an independent notional word. It is as frequently used asnoun, verb, adjective, adverb and preposition. Onomatopoeia has variablepattern. There axe monosyllable and polysyllabic onomatopoeia. It has uniquephonological characteristics. It is because of onomatopoeia that onelanguage becomes more vivid, lively and possesses a sense of rhythm.
