This thesis reports a research of a special subject with regard to one specific book. That is to say, the present research belongs to the category of investigation into the linguistic history. To be specific, the thesis makes a comparative study of the quotations of Fang Yan in Li Shan's annotations to Wen Xuan and Fang Yan Jiao Jian by Zhou Zumo. A close examination of every item gives the characteristics of the quotations of Fang Yan in Li Shan'a annotations. At the same time, the present study analyzes the contributions as well as failures of the quotations. The following points are the value and significance of the present research:(1) The thesis examines the literature that is hundreds of years earlier than the birth of the block-printed edition of Fang Yan. By means of comparison and contrast, it analyzes and concludes the possible causes for the existing differences.(2) The thesis gives an overall evaluation in terms of the success and failure of Li Shan's quotations of Fang Yan, his research fruits, and also the success and failure of Zhou Zumo's quotations of Li Shan's in Jiao Jian.(3) The thesis provides a reliable reference and assistance for the emendation of Fang Yan.(4) The thesis benefits further and more comprehensive investigation into Fang Yan in terms of its functions, influences and values.The thesis, with about 63,000 words, embraces 6 chapters as follows:Chapter One, Introduction, mainly introduces the major purposes of the subject, its current research situation, methodology and research procedures.Chapter Two, according to the standards, examines all the materials one by one. Through the comparison with Zhou's Jiao Jian, this chapter finds the similarities and differences, and then seeks the causes.Chapter Three firstly compares the explained words hi Li Shan's Fang Yan with those in Jiao Jian, then analyzes the comparative results and finally draws conclusions.Chapter Four compares the explaining words in Li Shan's quotations with Jiao Jian, and analyzes and draws conclusions.Chapter Five gives a brief evaluation about the success and failure in Zhou Zumo's quotations of Li Shan's annotations hi Jiao Jian.Chapter Six induces three characteristics in quotations of Li Shan's annotations, and evaluates objectively its contributions as well as failures.
