Media Language In Hong Kong From The Variation Of The Film Dialogues In The Language Code

The language education policy of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government is to enable the Hong Kong people, particularly students and working adults, to become biliterate (in written Chinese and English) and trilingual (in Cantonese, Putonghua and Spoken English).In 2003, the Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (SCOLAR) issued a consultation document titled "Action Plan to Raise Language Standards in Hong Kong". According to Chapter 3, Section 7, the report mentioned that the language environment in schools and homes is strongly influenced by that in the wider community. The public considered the mass media a particularly important part of the local language environment. The quality of language used in the mass media was believed to have a significant influence on the community's language standard.However, SCOLAR only recommended TV program should be broadcast with Cantonese/ Putonghua NICAM and all English programs on the English Channels should be provided with English subtitles, etc.We know that language cannot be broken up with our daily life. Mass media is all around us. We can always notice some advertisement or hear some conversations which combine Cantonese and English. Some even use wrong English in the conversation.This thesis use Hong Kong's movie dialogue to analyse the phenomenon of Hong Kong mass media's language. We will like to focus on the analysis of the code-mixing and code-switching on mass media's language, so that we can prove that the mass media's language is not standard and this will affect our language standard.In this thesis, Chapter 1 introduces the history and culture of Hong Kong and the purpose of this project. Chapter 2 talks about how and why we choose the movies as our data base. It also talks about the methodology of the author's research. Chapter 3 presents the project findings and analysis. Chapter 4 states the conclusion and recommendation.From the research, the writer divided all collected data into 6 categories. We know that mass media does have lots of non-standard language which will have negative effect on our language usage. Our government needs to establish a standard for the mass media so that we can let our language change in a controlled way.
