The Book of Wei Dynasty written by Weishou in Beiqi Dynasty, is the first official history book focusing on the description of the regime established by the minority, and is so far the most integrated one recorded rise and fall of North Wei Dynasty (386-534AD) in Chinese history. At present the academic field pays more attention to such aspects as collation, compilation and hermeneutic of historical documents in terms of the study of history books, whereas less attention to the grammatical research. So this dissertation aims at the grammatical research, with the adverbs on The Book of Wei Dynasty as the study object. This dissertation makes research on the adverbs in The Book of Wei Dynasty from 3 aspects as follows:1. The dissertation depicts and analyses the use of adverbs in the Book of Wei Dynasty in detail, outlining the general situation of the use of them. The dissertation summarizes 561 adverbs in the Book of Wei Dynasty, which are divided into eight categories, such as adverbs of time, adverbs of scope, adverbs of degree, modal adverbs, mood adverbs, link adverbs, negative adverbs and adverbs of indicating and substituting.2. This dissertation analyses the development of the adverbs in the Book of Wei Dynasty, and reveals their position in the history of Chinese grammar by both historical comparison and synchronic study. In the total 574 adverbs in the book of Wei Dynasty, there are 333 adverbs originated from the primitive Chinese language and 228 adverbs widely used in the mediaeval Chinese language, which inherited the most adverbs in primitive Chinese language, reflected the style and features of mediaeval Chinese language, and included the germinations of some adverbs in latter-day Chinese language. There are 179 disyllabic adverbs in this book, among which 35 disyllabic adverbs belong to primitive Chinese language, accounting for 19.6% of the total disyllabic adverbs, and 144 disyllabic adverbs belong to mediaeval Chinese language, accounting for 80.4%. This reflects, to some extent, the disyllabic features of words in mediaeval Chinese language.3. The mechanism of grammaticalization of adverbs in Chinese language has been one of the hot topics in adverbs study in recent years. Many of the empty words in Chinese language are from the grammaticalization of the substantives, and the adverbs are even an important achievement. This dissertation chooses such four adverbs as Jiqi, Buguo, Xiangjiang, Ting for case study, then outlines the track of grammaticalization of the adverbs, and concludes the two types of grammaticalization of adverbs: the grammaticalization of cross-layer structure and the re-analysis of semantic orientation.
