T. S. Eliot's"Impersonal Theory"and"Oblivion of Oneself"in Chinese traditional literature are both of vital significance and draw great academic attention. It has been noticed that both two theories propose to negate a direct poetic self-expression in artistic creation. However, this thesis is intended to make a contrast between the two theories and explore the differences stemming from these two literary traditions. By comparing and contrasting T. S. Eliot's"Impersonal Theory"with Chinese traditional literature points of view, one can see more clearly how the"Impersonal Theory"jeopardizes the art of poetry and misses the nature of poetry.Apart from introduction and conclusion, the thesis consists of three chapters: 1) Eliot's"Impersonal Theory", where an introduction of the theory is presented, 2) Chinese Traditional Literature Views, which is devoted to the introduction of some Chinese traditional literature views that have internal relations with"Impersonal Theory", and 3) Questioning Eliot's"Impersonal Theory"in the Light of Chinese Traditional Literature. The three parts forms an integral whole and leads to the conclusion that"Impersonal Theory"is inconsistent with the nature of poetry.
