| "YOU" (travelling), in the Chinese literary culture, is often expressed in various themes such as "education-travel", "leisure-travel", and "travel for the pursuit of government offices". It points to the pursuit of spiritual peace, which is often enriched with cultural embedment.Recent researches show that 19 Ancient Poems written in late Dong Han period marks the watershed in the realization of "YOU" in Chinese literature as a form of aesthetic spirit. Before this period there are few such works, and after, there are many. The transition is in line with the development of thoughts in the different times. In late Dong Han period, the intellectuals lost the direction of their life in the midst of the turmoil of the feudal society, which accelerates the change of the subject's ideology and brought the awakening of individual consciousness. Therefore, "YOU" in the 19 Ancient Poems demonstrates in every aspect the reconstruction and search of life on the one hand, and social value system by the intellectuals in this specific period on the other, as the poets are experiencing the turmoil and the awakening of individual consciousness compounded their sense of loss, anxiety, and depression.Concerning the origin of the concept "YOU", in the present study the writer will analyze from three different perspectives:cultural continuity, historical background, and awareness of individual consciousness. As a group of poems expressing "YOU", the 19 Ancient Poems express a spacio-temporal consciousness different from that in the past:it's based on the temporal consciousness of independent life-experience and awareness of the individual. Coming from the prime of the Han Empire, Si Maxiangru's "universal inclusion" aptly summarizes the notion of spacio-temporal consciousness in Han Fu. Ancient poets no longer give voice to their feelings from a macroscopic view, but focus on what lies before their eyes and happens in their surroundings, and words that touch their hearts and mould their passion, using the subtle events to express the consciousness of one's life. This does not mean that the spacio-temporal consciousness of the ancient poets has been downsized, on the contrary, it is being broadened and deepened---not relying on the context of classical scholasticism or intellectuals of imperial hegemony---travelling towards a more expansive land. The theme of "YOU" in 19 Ancient Poems has a deeper, inner, and artistic enriching manifestation. |
