Pilates, scientifically named as"static muscle consolidation", is a unique training system of body balance invented by a German, Joseph Pilates. It is based on the coordination between breathing and movement, and emphasizes the influences of respiratory movement on physical activities, in order to achieve multiple purposes, including intensifying the core muscles (composed of abdominals, gluteus and lower back muscles), increasing flexibility, rectifying unhealthy postures, restoring balanced body, relieving pressure and etc. Pilates, as a promising bodybuilding exercise in the new century, is playing an important part in the development of gymnasiums and has become one of the most popular events in gyms. Conclusions are reached as follows.1. All 12 large and medium-sized gyms investigated in Central Jiangsu have opened courses for Pilates, but the problem is that they cannot meet the demands of all members because of limited class hour and ground shortage.2. Presently Pilates coaches in gyms in Central Jiangsu are mainly females, among which most are part-time instructors. This causes a lack of qualified and high-leveled Pilates coaches.3. Most members in gyms in Central Jiangsu are young office ladies, aiming to improve physical and mental health. However, there are still problems like lack of comprehensive understanding of Pilates, unbalanced age structure of members and etc.4. Managers of gyms in Central Jiangsu do not have a full knowledge about Pilates, which causes chaos in management of coaches, members and courses.5. Pilates taught in gyms in Central Jiangsu is comparatively monotonous, mainly mat Pilates. It is a combination of correlative material and actual circumstances and taught by coaches collectively through demonstration, leading and language-hint methods.Recommendations:1. As a result of shortage of class hours, gyms are suggested to regard the needs of members as guidelines, apply feedback tables, and check feedback regularly, to arrange the class hours and timetable appropriately, and add the input of capital and increase the sites for the exercise accordingly.2. Pointing at the phenomenon of part-time instructors at gyms in Central Jiangsu, apartments concerned are advised to hold training classes for Pilates'teachers irregularly, and Schools of Sports Science should add Pilates courses, develop certain amount of teachers and improve the teaching level.3. Concerning with the monotonous structure of Pilates participants, the author suggests different types of people should be given publicity and instructions accordingly and gyms should exert the effect of correcting unhealthy gestures, preventing injury and restoring health. Meanwhile, gyms should have more deliberate investigation according to this phenomenon.4. Since administrators of gyms do not have an overall recognition, the author suggests gyms should train administrators on gym arrangement, gym knowledge, course management and etc.5. To deal with the irrationality of Pilates course setting, it is suggested that level-oriented classification method or number-limited teaching method should be adopted in collective mat classes, and more types of Pilates and other teaching methods should be added.
