As one of the fundamental work in geological survey, geological mapping hasalways been regarded as an important indicator in assessing the level of a country`sgeological practice. With the development of Remote Sensing techniques and itsintroduction into the geological field made it possible to use it widely and broughtabout tremendous convenience to the geological mapping. Now, the techniques toobtain the geological data has also achieved a rapid development. Since remotesensing techniques can provide users with various remote sensing data with differentresolutions, ASTER data, among such a huge data source, has been seen as a mostappropriate data source for remote sensing geological mapping due to its possessedfeatures such as high resolution and multi-band characteristics.This paper, with the support of a "11thfive year plan" research project and baseof gathering the previous geological record of Caihuagou Region of Toksun County ofXinjiang province which was the selected research area, conducted a research over theapplication of ASTER data in the geological mapping method.Trough theman-computer interaction approach,data preprocessing(Geometric precisioncorrection, Image cutting, To deal with noise) and enhancement (namely principlecomponent analysis, band ratio, decorrelation strech and HSV transformationmethod etc.) were proceeded to the ASTER data, and to extracting the informationsuch as lithology, stratum,geological structure and alteration etc., enhancementprocessing methods that can reflect the special information were developedseparately.Combining the consequences of remote sensing image processing andvisual interpretation, different types of geological bodies were extracted and theremote sensing geological result map of the study area were formed,therebyconfirmed the space distribution of various geological bodies and feasibility of usingthe ASTER multispectral remote sensing data in geological mapping.
