Automobile industry plays a very important role in Chinese national economy, automobile manufacturing enterprises need to constantly update models in order to adapt to the fierce market competition. The technology of auto panels manufacturing determines the quality and production efficiency of auto panels. Technology of panel's process planning which is very important in auto panels manufacturing is directly relates product quality, production efficiency and cost. The application of CAD/CAE/CAM is the trend of automobile stamping dies design and manufacturing.Panel die surface design is an important part of panel stamping process planning. This paper analyses the characteristics of CAD, summarizes the relevant experience of surface design, studies the problems of surface restoration and modification, and discusses the necessity of developing a panel die surface processing module.The reasons of surface defects were deeply studied in this paper, and then the characteristics of panel surface defects were summarized. Combining the methods of surface reconstructing in reverse engineering and the theory of surface modeling, this paper put forward three methods to repair surface defects, i.e. surface boundary adjustment, surface reconstruction and local surface reconstruction.Designers often need to modify blend-face in order to satisfy the requirements of deforming and machining. An ordinary blend-face modification method and a special modification method for three surfaces blending were studied based on the blend principles which are used in both CAD software and designer's experience.Based on the above study, the author has developed the surface processing modules using UG application development technology, which include the surface defect inspection function, defect repair function, blend-face recognition function and modification function. Finally, the effectiveness of this method is proven by the practical examples.
