Goal:To sum up the treatments within Chinese medical literature for blackish facial patches whilst exploring the additional usages and characteristics of external application of medcine. Method:Summary of related documents:Arrangement of data relating to blackish facial patches in Chinese medical literature, to induce an understanding of the evolution of the condition, etiology and pathogenesis, and methods of treatment. Research into externally applied treatments: Analysis of ancient medical literature obtained from the chinese medecine electronic database-the encyclopaedia TCM-extracting information from the literature on the many different types of condition, and of the 260 different methods of external application, exploring around 180 different types of medicine.Using Modern medical literature from CNKI, from 1990 to 2010, to research the main discoveries regarding external treatment of blackish facial patches within Chinese medecine over the last 20 years. On the basis of forming a standard, sifting through 2183 related documents, and narrowing them down to 131 in order to create a database of the 146 and 151 different types of medicine. Using Microsoft Office-Excel to chart statistical data and use this as the basis of an analysis on repeated usage of medication, regarding taste and temperature, channel tropism, medicinal qualities, medicinal effects, side effects. then by the resulting analysis of the statistics, inducing the laws, patterns and distinguishing qualities of the different applications of medecine. Results and Conclusion:The Ancient Chinese thought the etiology and pathogenesis of blackish facial patches to be excess fire from yin deficiency, spleen yang insufficiency, exogenous wind-heat, irregular eating patterns, emotional injuries. The above etiology and pathogenesis result in symptoms of phlegm and fluid retention causing haemostasis resulting in qi-blood disharmony. An inability to recieve nutrition is the main mechanism causing sickness. In order to treat blackish facial patches, methods involving dispersal of the liver, adjusting of the spleen, nourishing yin to reduce pathogenic fire, promoting blood circulation by removing haemostasis are the most common. Modern Chinese Medecine Doctors believe etiology and pathogenesis of blackish facial patches to be commonly caused by suppression of emotion, arterial stasis, internal lesion of the spleen caused by overexhaustion, kidney essence deficiency. Both Modern and Ancient Chinese medicine doctors agree that internal factors cannot be ignored, that external applications cannot solely be relied upon to treat blackish facial patches, and emphasis the importance of internal and external treatment. Having analysed the statistical data, we have discovered the following patterns and characteristics.1) Kinds of medicineA:Regarding the use of medicinal plants and herbs, the root and rhizome are the most useful parts, fruits and seeds take second place.B:usage of aromatic medicine was relatively common; such as the root of Dahurian angelica, the root of Chinese wild ginger, lilac, spikenard.2) Property and flavor, channel tropismA:Regarding the flavors spicy, sweet, sour, bitter, and salty; spicy, sweet and bitter flavoured medecines were the most common, and of cold, hot, warm, and cool temperatures, medecine was mainly of a warm temperature, with cold in second place.B:In medicines involving lungs, liver, spleen, stomach, kidneys, etiology and pathogenesis of the condition are basically identical.3) EfficacyA:In Modern times usage of plants and herbal medecine is common. In Ancient times usage of Animals and minerals in making medicine was comparatively common.B:Usage of inflammation relieving medicine was relatively common, for example; silar divaricatum, the bud of the lily magnolia flower, radix ligustici sinensis, the root of Chinese wild ginger, silkworms which have died from batrytis.C:Medicines which were often used in treating the head and face, were, for example the root of Dahurian angelica, Siler divaricatum, radix ligustici sinesis etc.D:They chose to use medicines with whitening properties; motherwort, lucid asparagus, caltrop etc.E:Age-resistant medicines were common, for example; the root of Chinese wild ginger, rhizome of lagehead atractylodes, polygonatum.F:Usage of white coloured medicine was relatively common; the root of Dahurian angelica, monkshood, white vitus pentaphylla, tuckahoe etc.G:Medicine which restrained the tyrosine enzyme was in relatively common usage, such as Sichuan Ligsticum wallichi, rhizome of lagehead atractylodes, silkworms, etc.
