| Yuan Zhen, an major writer in in the MiddleTang Dynasty, although enjoying the same literal status as Bai Juyi, was studied much less compared to Bai Juyi; furthermore, Yuan's fiction characters were regarded heartless and pretended lovers, on which the author disagrees. Since Yuan, was a prolific writer on various contents, the author chooses his works on love and marriage for the present study to prove that Yuan Zhen was not heartless and his works, serving as a link between the past and the future, on marriage carries special features.The introduction mainly deals with the title, purpose, significance and research methods involved in the study. Aroused by the lack of in-depth investigation on Yuan Zhen's marriage works and the unfair treatment on Yuan Zhen from the academe, the present study, with the methods text analysis, co-reference and comparison & contrast, digs into his works with references to his own personal experience in order to bring back the true Yuan Zhen.Chapter One focuses on the analysis of Yuan Zhen's love events and his mental attitudes on them. The present study adopts the consensus among the academe that tales of YingYing is his autobiographic novel. Yuan Zhen's love experiences and his mental attitude is covered in Subpart One. Combining the a chronicle of Yuan Zhen's life with his works on love & marriage, the study intends to conducts research on his martial status, concluding that Yuan Zhen was sincere to his first love Yingying, his first wife Wei Cong, even his concubine named An Xianpin, which abosolutely defies the idea of Yuan Zhen being affectionless and crafty in his marriage.Chapter Two draws its attention to macro study on Yuan Zhen's works on marriage. General investigation is done to various aspects, namely, the classification of works on marriage and their origins, contents, writing devices, A wide study is carried out from varied perspectives to get an overall understanding of Yuan Zhen's relevant works.Chapter Three draws its attention to narrative analysis-specifically narrative analysis on Tales of YingYing-on Yuan Zhen's works. From the analysis, it is concluded that Yuan Zhen'works maintain obvious narrative characteristics. He has revealed his true feelings with objective narration in his works, which convey the sense of objectivism to the readers. Besides, his ingenious application of other writing devices reveals the lovers'inner world in love experiences. In short, his works are bursting with ideas and he develops them in great art.Chapter Four centers on the comparison study between Yuan Zhen's works on marriage and love. Based on the macro study in the previous chapters, Yuan Zhen's love poems and condolence poems are compared with the relevant works of other writers of the same time with the intention to recognize Yuan Zhen's contributions to Chinese literature and his role in Chinese literature history. Yuan Zhen's love poems, distinguished from that of Li He, contemporary with Yuan Zhen, express personal emotions boldly and unprecedentedly, hence, influence Li Shangyin's writing a lot. His condolence poems, broadening people's vision and opening a new prospect to poems, even lead the Chinese literary world. Following Pan Yan, Yuan Zhen leads condolence poems to a higher state. On the process of condolence poem development, Yuan Zhen plays an important linking role.The concluding part summarizes Yuan Zhen's experiences and makes comments on the unfair treatment he suffers from the academe. His achievements on literature will be restated, with the hope of arousing objective evaluation on them. |
