Viewing over the development history of foreign language teaching, we can find that grammar teaching has been an important aspect of foreign language teaching. Therefore, which approach is the most effective one for teaching it is the problem that we should consider with great care.Along with the development of educational reform, approaches with the nature of induction have been explicitly or implicitly advocated. However, in the lagging process of teaching reform in vocational English teaching, in most cases induction is hard to conduct. Of course, any kind of teaching approach has its own advantages and disadvantages; the point is how to make reasonable use of them in specific situations. In the actual situation of English teaching in vocational colleges, which approach is more effective—this question should be decided and verified by the teaching effects.Through a large amount of literature review, and based upon experiences from the observation about the practical teaching in vocational colleges, the author formulates the hypothesis that deduction and induction are both effective and beneficial in foreign language teaching. But when all the psychological and cognitive, and individual variables, as well as the linguistic characteristics and features themselves are taken into account, one of the two approaches should be more effective than the other, this is to be manifested by the empirical research of this thesis. This thesis comprises the following chapters:Chapter One is the introduction with 3 sections: the background, the purpose and the structure of the thesis.Chapter Two is literature review, which discusses the ideas of induction and deduction, as is the relevant literature in the concern with fundamental concept of the theory of the thesis.Chapter Three is the research design, which presents the list of research question:Which approach, deduction or induction, is better when applied in the current situation of English teaching in vocational colleges, where the job requirement and employment expectation of students, as well as the students'academic performance level, are different from those of other institutions. In this chapter the author also reports the procedures of the project conducted by the author on the English classroom teaching. It is conducted between 2 groups of students in a vocational college in Liaoning Province, where the teachers instructed in a deductive approach and an inductive approach respectively. Data is to be collected from a series of measures of tests, questionnaires and interviews. Chapter Four presents the result and analyses the data collected, from the questionnaires and experimental pre-test and post-test, which are processed with SPSS11.5 in order to verify and answer the questions. The last chapter is conclusion, which is composed of the major findings, implications and the limitations of the thesis.
