Research On Origin-indicating Function Of Phonetic Complement And Construction Of Word Family

This paper had a in-depth discussion on the origin-indicating function of phonetic complements,causes of multi-meaning of phonetic complement,relationships among meanings of phonetic complement and the relationship between extension of meanings and breeding of words,put forward a feasible way for construction of word family.Main conclusions are as follows:(1)Breeding of words contributes to breeding of Pictophonetic characters, phonetic complements can indicate origin of words;(2)The hierarchy,multi-direction of breeding words and phonetic loan together account for the diversity of meanings that implied by phonetic complements;(3)Extension of meanings and breeding of words following the same rule , accordingly , we proved that the meaning-extending of phonetic complement accounts for the variety of its meaning. This discovery has great significance to the demonstration of breeding levels of words;(4) We explored the complex relationships, such as parallel, cause and effect, variation, between various meanings that implied by phonetic complement. From these relationships, we get a glimpse of the word family context and the level of breeding;(5) The relationships between meanings of phonetic complement may remote because of phonetic loan. Phonetic loan often happens among phonetic complements that are similar in voice, these phonetic complements with similar voice may stem from the same origin. We, therefore, collect cognate phonetic complements and make heads or tails of their breeding pedigree. It not only broadens the scale of cognate words, but also provides convenience to the seeking for etymological character.Based on all have been done,we sort out a feasible way which will make full use of phonetic complement for construction of word family.
