The ultimate aim of a foreigner learning Chinese is to improve the ability to communicate using Chinese. Audio-visual material like TV drama besides reenacting realistic human interactions, also contains crucial cultural information. Therefore, this author opines that using audio-visual material to teach is more advantageous than using traditional written material, especially when the desired language environment is lacking. Using audio-visual material can provide a realistic language environment to the students, improve communication skills effectively, and provide the students with a better understanding of Chinese culture.Basing on previous studies, combining with analysis done on the results of survey done among Korean students, this paper further explore the theoretical and practical implications of teaching using audio-visual material. This paper also contains a teaching plan based on the TV drama series"Home with kids". This paper believes that fully utilizing audio-visual material in teaching can motivate the students to learn Chinese in a realistic language environment, and therefore improve their language proficiency.
