Teaching Chinese characters is the focus and the most difficult part of the Chinese teaching to foreigners. Especially, teaching the similar Chinese characters is the bottleneck of it. Teaching the similar characters to foreigners is not only the basic teaching of language, but also the method of spreading the culture. Whereas, there have been very few researches on this domain till now. Furthermore, the investigations of similar Chinese characters'discriminations and memorizations all remained at the studies on mothertongue teaching and noumenon. So this study is trying to discover a much more effective way, which combined with the productions of cognitive and memory strategies, to teach, discriminate and memorize the similar Chinese characters.This article included five parts.Part one was the introduction. It introduced the backgrounds and significances of this topic and gave a conclusion of the relevant study productions. Then it introduced the contents and methods of the study.Part two introduced the relevant theories of cognitive and memory strategy. The relevant theories were about the encoding, storage and retrieval of the memories and how to avoid forgetting. And it introduced the appropriate cognitive and memory strategies to each stage.Part three was an investigation of the learning situations. According to the analysed results of the questionnaire, it gave conclusions of the learning characteristics and difficulties, the cognitive styles and a lot of relevant informations of the students. So it provided the theoretical informations to the design project.Part four is the overall teaching design of the project. This part gave an overall design to the similar Chinese characters teaching that combined with the cognitive and memory strategies. The design included the teaching principles, objectives, the analysises of the contents and learners, the classifications of the characters, etc. At last, it gave some suggestions and guidances to the learners.Part five gave a design example. This part listed practical teaching plans that contained the ways of learning, discrimination and memorization at the basic of classifications of the characters which depending on the units. The last part was the conclusion of making a prediction of the practical effect and giving the evaluations and summaries to the project.
