Geological graphics in the oil mining, geological exploration, geographicinformation systems have a wide range of applications. As graphic documents drawnby mapping system should reflect current geological overview information clearly, it’svaluable to research geological rendering technology and apply it into geologicalmapping systems. With the development of computer technology, geologicalrendering technology has gone through different stages from hand-drawing tocomputer aided drawing, and become important content in information visualization.In this paper, we introduce several popular geological mapping softwares, and explainthe limitation of them. Then we develop a new geological mapping system, andintroduce it in data-manage method and design implementation:1. The process of computer aided drawing can be divided into three stages:digitization, data processing and graphing, data manage is very important in the wholeprocess. As metadatahas effect in data description, data positioning, data judgement, data tracing anddata integrity security, we propose a system data manage method based on metadata,which manages data of graphic elements by creating attributes table of metadata. Thismethod raise the efficiency of data manage in our system observably.2. Considering the convenience of QT lib in switching platform and managinggraphic interface, we develop our geological mapping system under QT applicationdevelopment environment. Based on understanding of user requirements andcharacteristic in oil exploration, we design the whole framework and differentfunction modules of the mapping system, and finish the implemention of them. Themain modules of the system include graphic headers management, graphic layersmanagement, graphic elements management, data management, coordinatemanagement, edit management and display mangement. The development of system follows the process of software development industry strictly, includes multiple stagessuch as demand analysis, detailed design, coding, debugging, maintenance, and so on.In each stage, we record our tasks detailedly.Finally, we carry out our system in oil exploration, the result shows that thesystem is able to draw geological graphic documents such as contour maps andgeological structure maps quickly, and those graphic documents meet the requirementof production whether in drawing scale or in precision. Besides, the system offer userswith different kinds of MMI (Men Machine Interface), with which users are bale toedit and modify graphic documents conveniently.
