The design and formation comprehensively of Atlas is a complex system engineering. Itwill use the basic theory such as the theory of the atlas, application method of map database,collection and handling methods of thematic data, design and establishment methods ofthematic maps and the formation of general maps.This paper analyzes the characteristics of shaanxi geography, social economy, and the thehumanities style, designs the content structure with the condition of shaanxi province,Analyzes the characteristic of thematic data, and introduces the the project andimplementation of data classification and classification in a project.According to the need ofthe project, the paper designs the principles and schemes of data reduction, comprehensivechoices of each element, and designs the represent method based on color dizzy hill-shadingwhich suits general map elements. The source of comprehensive atlas data is wide. The paperdesigns a number of different formats of mapping data conversion,joining, and registrationschemes, achieves that the data is finished in a software, and ensures that the integrity, spaceconsistency and attribute consistency of the data, based on the analysis of different datastructure with different software formats and expression effect, combining with the productionpractice and the need of later published.The paper studies the statistical data classification,gradation based on discriminatory analysis, system clustering method, dynamic clusteringmethod and fuzzy clustering method and so on and flexible application according to thecharacteristics of drawing area data. This paper studies methods about producing color dizzyhill-shading model using DEM, stacking into figure based on the thematic elements, andexpressing the characteristics of drawing area. This paper studies the method of setting up thedatabase of shaanxi atlas with the mapping data. It provides the technical support for thedevelopment of the derivative products for the map update, achievements and make full use ofelectronic version in the future.Through the above analysis process, it realizes the mapping of basic geographic data,and improves the data format conversion method, following the scientific basis and basicprinciples of atlas, using map database and many drawing software, combining with thepractice of shaanxi atlas based on the mapping basic theory and method, using computer aid technology.It uses remote sensing image processing technology to realize the geometriccorrection of image data, the color adjustment and superposition and mapping of vector maps.It uses statistic method to process thematic data, referencing cognitive theory,creates thepresenting method of data index in the map, and leads to the characteristics of clear, accurateand the outstanding straightforward of expression data. Through the practice of the design ofatlas, the final atlas data meets the published requirements, and provide the safeguard for theproduction of shaanxi atlas, provides data support to set up dynamic update map databasebased on this data, which provides new reference for provincial atlas.
