Gantry type machining center becomes a universal equipment of modern metal-cutting machinetool because of its structural rigidity, processing range, and high power. During the design of machinetool system, line feed drive system of machining center is directly related to if the spindle can quicklylocate, instantaneously start and stop. Line feed drive system with good dynamic characteristics caneffectively reduce spare time, and improve work efficiency. In this paper, dynamic characteristics forline feed drive component of bridge type gantry machining center are studied, and the performance ofmachine tool is estimated, in order to make the irrationality optimized.Firstly, the virtual prototyping model of bridge type gantry machining center is established. Thecomponents of line feed drive system is analyzed, and the mass character of each line feed drivedirections is obtained. On the premise of analyzing structural relation and motion characteristics, thequick feed process of line feed drive system is dynamically simulated by using RecurDyn. Thedisplacement, track, velocity and acceleration of feed motion are obtained to examine the rationalityof structure motion. By means of theoretical calculation, corresponding drive motors are chosen.The simulation of acceleration torque on start-up can prove the feasibility of chosen servo motors, inorder to make necessary improvements. Then, according to the request of improvements, the line feeddrive component of machining center is optimized in structure, the beam taken as example. Theoptimization design of beam structure and tendon layout takes rigidity, vibration resistance andlightweight as evaluation indexes. The optimal design scheme is obtained by the method-comprehensive optimizing with static and dynamic performance, in order to improve dynamiccharacteristics of the components. Finally, prototype process and operation results can verify thefeasibility of the design scheme. Natural frequency and vibration mode are acquired by hammeringmodal test, which can make experimental verification for the modal of prototype beam and comparewith the analysis results by ANSYS.This research provides analysis and optimization method for researching dynamic characteristicsfor line feed drive component of bridge type gantry machining center. The conclusions can help todesign practical machine tool. It plays a positive role to improve the design level of related products.
