After the concept of sustainable development emerged, people began to analyze some countries or some areas with the method of sustainable development. In the process of analysis, some indexes of sustainable development appear, such as the Index of Economic Well-Being (IEWB) brought forward by Osberg, Measure of Economic Welfare (MEW) brought forward by Nordhaus and Tobin, and the Green GDP that we all know. There are so many indexes of sustainable development that we may ask:Why are there so many indexes of sustainable development? What is the main difference between the indexes? What are the characteristics and insufficient of the various indexes? And is there one index of sustainable development that can measure sustainable development perfectly?Based on these questions and ideas, we review and analyze various indexes of sustainable development in this paper. First of all, we make a simple classification of various types of indexes of sustainable development, and then we review and analyze the indexes based on the classification we have made before. Though the review and analysis, we want to make clear what are the major characteristics and insufficient of the sustainable indexes. In addition, sustainable development involved so much content and theory that we cannot review and analyze so many indexes perfectly and in detail, so we take compromise to list, composite, analysis the representative indexes. The structure of this paper is mainly as follows:The first part of this paper is the introduction, mainly introduces the current context of sustainable development as well as the significance of topics. This section gives the block diagram of the whole paper from the figure to be more clear that the overall structure of this paper. In addition, this section gives the innovation of this paper. The second part of this paper will analyze the current indexes of sustainable development. In the second part, what will do firstly is to analyze the definition of sustainable development, and then divide the indexes of sustainable development into five classes, and we explain why we divide the indexes into five classes. After making the classification, we make a simple review on the five classes of indexes. The third part of this paper is a comprehensive analysis section as the focus of this paper. In this section, we will review and analyze the five classes of indexes in detail, the five classes are dashboards, composite indexes, adjusted GDPs, adjusted net saving (ANS), and footprints. In the process of review, we will show the characteristics and shortcomings of the indexes. This paper will make a longitudinal comparative analysis of various types of indexes, in addition, this paper will also make a horizontal comparative analysis. Form the comparison, we want to analyze the characteristics and shortcomings between the indexes clearly. The fourth part is the problem of the current sustainable development measure. In the third part, we have analyzed and researched the indexes, and point out the advantages and disadvantages of the five indexes, but these research lake of comprehensive analysis of the five indexes. In the fourth part, we solve this problem, in this part, we research some issues of the five indexes, including predictive, normative uncertainties, cross-national problem and so on, this part plays the role which links the preceding. The fifth part is the suggestions and prospects, with the aid of MFA, we put forward some suggestions as follows:1.The sustainable development questions need classification,2. Sustainable development need use "stock" to measure,3.Monetization should be careful, monetization should be used in economic aspects only,4.Sustainable development of environmental dimension should built on the basis of physical indicators. The main innovations of this paper are:1, A summary classification of sustainable development indexes, and a structured overview of various types of indexes. Though this classification, grasp the sustainable development in whole.2, For each type of indexes, we conduct a longitudinal comparative analysis as well as a horizontal comparative analysis.3, we propose a number of problems of today’s sustainable development, and prospects of the future of sustainable development indexes should have what kind of characteristics and so on.
