As we all know, polystyrene (PS) materials possess excellentproperties, such as lightweight, isolation, thermal insulation, quakeproof,sound insulation, corrosion protection, water-resistant and chemicalstability, which have their extensive applications in architecture, lightindustry, shipping and national defense, and so on. China has become oneof the largest countries on the production and utilization of polystyrenematerials. In our country, polystyrene materials have reached85%in theexterior wall thermal insulation materials in construction. And, it has anincreasing trend in recent years. However, with the increasingrequirements of national construction on the flame-retardant of insulationmaterials, the traditional polystyrene insulation materials are difficult tomeet the requirements of laws and regulations. Therefore, improving theflame retardancy of the traditional polystyrene insulation materials andpreparing flame-retarded polystyrene insulation materials to meet therequirements of national laws and regulations are urgent.In this paper, based on the preparation process of the traditionalpolystyrene insulation materials, expandable polystyrene resin (EPS) wasprepared with the addition of flame retardant glue during foam moldingprocess without changing the preparation process of EPS. Moreover,flame retardants were coated on the surface of the insulation materialafter foam molding process to prepare flame-retarded polystyreneinsulation materials. And, the properties of flame-retarded EPS werecharacterized and discussed. The main work is shown as follows.1. Select suitable additive-type flame retardants to prepare flame retarded EPS materials. The flame retardant properties of chosenflame-retarded materials meet the national flame resistance standard "A"level for the building materials. At the same time, flame retardants andEPS beads in the preparation of EPS insulation material expansionprocess can adhesive with each other. In addition, this method isconvenient in construction and low in prices.2. Design the preparation formulation of flame-retarded polystyreneinsulation materials. The preparation formulation of flame-retardedpolystyrene insulation materials is obtained by investigating the effect ofthe amount of flame retardants on the flame retardant properties ofpolystyrene insulation materials.3. Build the appropriate preparation procedure of flame-retardedpolystyrene insulation materials. Excellent materials, scientific formulaand optimal preparation process are essential conditions for thepreparation of flame-retarded polystyrene insulation materials. In thispaper, we design a facile and effective way to prepare flame-retarded EPS,which combines the traditional polystyrene insulation materialpreparation procedure and the coating process.
