Objective: Two treatments were selected in this study—herbs-separated umbilicalmoxibustion and starch-separated umbilical moxibustion to cure the patients with primarydysmenorrhea, in order to observe the influences on prostaglandin, estradiol andprogesterone levels of the two groups and to probe into the mechanism of herbs-separatedumbilical moxibustion to cure primary dysmenorrhea and the effect of drugs in naveltherapy.Methods:66patients with primary dysmenorrhea were randomly divided into twogroups,33cases in each group. The changes of abdominal pain severity, prostaglandin, estradiol and progesterone levels of the two groups were observed and compared beforeand after intervention treatment.Result: Both groups could alleviate the severity of abdominal pain, and there weresignificant statistical differences between prior-treatment and post-treatment (P<0.01). Butthe long-term effects of the treating group were better than the control group. Both groupscould decrease the levels of prostaglandin and increase the level of progesterone. Therewere significant differences in regulating the estradiol levels before and after the treatmentof the treating group, while no significant statistical difference of the control group. Conclusion: The navel therapy had a good curative effect on primary dysmenorrhea,The group of herbs-separated umbilical moxibustion exceeded the group ofstarch-separated umbilical moxibustion in alleviating the severity of abdominal pain andregulating reproductive endocrine hormone. The mechanism for curing primarydysmenorrhea could be to regulate the reproductive endocrine hormone level bymodulating hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis. The differences of curative effects between two groups may be due to the action of drugs.
