Objective: The main purpose of this study is to put forward the Goal Setting Theory toenrich self-management education theories and behavior change strategies in individualswith diabetes,thus the goals of this paper are to: investigate whether Goal Setting is feasiblefor diabetes patients in hospital; explore it’s effectiveness for blood glucose control,self-management behavior and self-efficacy in diabetes; determine the main value of it’stheory and practice process in diabetes self-management education.Methods: Type2diabetes inpatients were recruited from the Endocrine Department ofTongji Hospital and were educated according to the theory and practice process of GoalSetting in this study,also with a follow-up of three months; Diabetes patients generallyquestionnaire, Diabetes Attitude Scale, Diabetes knowledge Scale, The Summary ofDiabetes Self-Care Activities, Self-Efficacy for Diabetes and Action Plans were used,additionally, FPG,2hPG and HbAlc were examined. Data analysis included descriptiveanalysis, hypothesis test, correlation analysis, regression analysis, factor analysis and so on.Results:1A total of48subjects completed this study, including37males and11females.2All the goals setted by subjects were: healthy eating(14),exercise(18), monitoring BG(8),medications(1) and others(12), in all of these goals,4terms were assigned,22termswere autonomic and27terms were collaborative.3All of the subjects’ FBG (7.55±2.21vs5.98±0.89mmol/L,P <0.01),2hBG(10.52± 3.69vs7.36±1.28mmol/L, P <0.05)and HbA1c(10.87±3.37vs8.10±1.92mmol/L,P <0.01) improved after the intervention.4Both of subjects’ self-management behavior (3.72±1.33vs4.17±0.8, P<0.001) andself-efficacy (7.22±1.52vs8.53±1.39, P<0.001) improved.5Most subjects reported that Goal Setting was helpful for their diabetesself-management, their would continue to use this strategy and recommend to otherfriends with diabetes, some patients reflected some difficulties in implementing theaction plans.Conclusions:1Goal setting is applicable for self-management education in patients with type2diabetes.2Goal setting is helpful for patients with type2diabetes to improve self-managementbehavior and control blood glucose.3Goal setting can promote diabetes self-management self-efficacy effectively...
