Since the policy of Reform and Opening-up, China’s domestic economy has developed rapidly and its international exchanges with other countries become increasingly frequent. As an international language, English is becoming more and more important in its social roles. To meet new situation, we need to put forward a new standard for college English teaching and higher objectives for the training of foreign language professionals, with particular emphasis on the training of English communicative skills in college English teaching.Gansu Normal University for Nationalities has made certain achievements in college English teaching reform in recent years. However, traditional teaching philosophy and teaching mode is still deeply rooted; in classroom, the teacher still plays the leading role and the students are in a subordinate position. This kind of "cramming" teaching method makes the communication between the teacher and the students very limited and the students have little opportunities to practice, which can’t motivate students and hence influences college English teaching quality and is not conducive to the cultivation of students’communicative and practical English language abilities.Structurally, this thesis is divided into five parts. Part one, on the basis of clear research purpose and meaning, makes an overview of the reform and development of college English teaching under constructivism at home and abroad with the methods of literature analysis.Part two summarizes the constructivist theory and its main points and the features of teaching and learning modes under constructivism and nails down three typical teaching modes under constructivism, which lays a theoretical foundation for this thesis.Part three advances and analyzes the problems and deficiencies existing in the college English teaching of Gansu Normal University for Nationalities with the methods of questionnaire and interview.Part four, under the guidance of the constructivist teaching theory, put forwards some specific, constructive proposals for the reform of the deficiencies in the college English teaching of Gansu Normal University for Nationalities:to change teaching philosophy and reposition the teacher-student relationship; to create learning situations and cultivate students’interest; to improve teaching quality and enhance students’meaning construction capability; to adopt a multiple and hierarchical evaluation method.Part five is the conclusion. Although the above proposals provide a theoretical reference for the College English teaching reform under constructivism of Gansu normal University for nationalities, in the specific teaching practice, we should make a flexible use of constructivist teaching methods and teach students in accordance with their aptitude according to the characteristics and the actual situation of our university and our students. To meet the requirements of the times, we should define a clear goal of personnel training, reform students training methods and teaching modes to develop qualified English-centered inter-disciplinary talents for the society.
