As a symbol of city, Toponomy shows its history, culture and fascination which is a necessary part of its birth, development and maturity. Yangzhou City had so many names of its streets, bridges and rivers that some were missing and some were deserved till now. There were414pieces of poems related of Yangzhou City among these about20,000pieces of Tang and Wudai poems, and44names of Yangzhou region in these414pieces which were recorded totally332times. By the way, there were158poets expressed emotions to Yangzhou City via poems which included109pieces reference to its place names. Thus, this thesis would like to research Toponomy of Yangzhou City among Tang and Wudai poems in order to reflect its culture and history. The thesis divided these44place names into6parts which respectably called Rivers, Flowers and Trees, Temples, Famous Persons, Memory of Sui Dynasty and Others. And I selected some place names which could stand for Yangzhou City to depict its image. In Rivers Part, there were15names which all had something on river, like rivers, bridges, ports and so on. I paid much attention on "Twenty-four Bridge and Niansi Bridge","Hangou and Han City" and "Yangzi Port and Guazhou". In section of "Twenty-four Bridge and Niansi Bridge", I worked on the key point that though Twenty-four Bridge and Niansi Bridge got their names from same thing, they became so significant after hundred years that Niansi Bridge had its own identity just lived as a place name. In section of "Hangou and Han City", I tried to find which give birth to Yangzhou City and why it called Han as its first name. In section of "Old ports:Yangzi Port and Guazhou, I explained relationship between them that the former one was the predecessor of the latter. In Flowers and Trees Part, there were3names which represented Yangzhou City’s character hardly. For example, Qionghua, willow and bamboo. In section of "Qionghua in Houtu temple", I handed on trouble that Old Qionghua was not same as the one nowadays, though they were in one botanical family. In section of "Wonderful place named Zhuxi", I focused on the origin of its name which became a total title of many interesting places after the poem written by Du Mu.In Temples Part, there were8names which were all famous temples in Yangzhou City’s history. I spent much time on Baita Temple, Darning Temple and Shita Temple which all spread as place names till now. In section of "Darning Temple and Qiling Tower", I discoursed about excellent influence on Tang Dynasty thousand years ago and on today which came from Great Monk Jianzhen who was remembered by Chinese and Japanese for about1200years for his splendid services. In Famous Persons Part, there were4names belongs to three famous persons who did great help to Yangzhou Citizens in history. In order to express their gratitude, Yangzhou Citizens named temple, dam and city gate after their names. These three persons were Jiang Ziwen, Xie An and Xu Ning.In Memory of Sui Dynasty Part, there were8names all about Sui Dynasty which was the former Dynasty of Tang. Because the last emperor Sui Yang Di took great care of Yangzhou when he was alive and finally died here in rebellion at the end of Sui Dynasty, it left numerous poems written by many poets to talk about this short-lived dynasty and it could not leave Yangzhou alone in their poems. As a result, there were series place names about Sui in Yangzhou City which only had a few left, like Sui Yang Di’s Mausoleum, Sui Palace, Sui Garden, Douji Tai and so on. I mainly did on three times changes on Sui Yang Di’s Mausoleum. In Others Part, there were6names which had no relation with ones above. So I put them in a separated part in order to take full44names in my thesis. I wrote a lot on Wucheng and Guangling, especially Guangling which was the second name of Yangzhou City Today.
