The Exploration On The Construction "Xsi(æ­»)" And Its Relative Issues

In this paper,we take the construction"Xsi死)" for research object, mainly because this construction is a form with three different meanings. In other words, this construction is a " Verb-Resultative" construction superficially, but in fact, it is a " Verb-Resultative" construction with thre e different meanings.Firstly, we make a comparatively detailed investigation into the synta c tic and semantic characteristic s o f the struc ture sync hro nic a lly by using de scriptive methods of structuralism. By investigation, we find that according to meanings this construction can be divided into three subclasses, which are "X1si(死)1","X2si(死)2"and"X3si(死)3"Furthermore,"si死)1"is an intransitive,’’si死)2"is an adjective, and“si死)3"is an adverb.Secondly, this paperinvestigates the creation and development of the structure"Xsi死)"diachronic ally. In the background of the creation of "Verb-Re sultative" construction, the serial verb construction"Ver(而)si(死)"or"Vsi(死)"of the Early Qin Dynasty grammaticalized into today’s "Xsi(死)"construction by the analogy of other " Verb-Re sultative" construction.Thirdly, this paper explains the semantic extension of"si(死)"in the construction."si(死)2"and "si(死)3"are considered to be derived from "si(死)1", but the creative mechanism is different totally. The creation of "si(死)2"would be impossible without cognitive metaphor and metonymy, and the creation of "si(死)3"is attributed to the Co-operative Principle and Pragmatic analogy underthe circumstance of hyperbole.
