The novels of British authoress George Eliot have the explanative meaning endlessly, and this thesis is dealing with the means of artistic expression especially the characters in Eliot’s voluminous novels in order to research the writer’s tragic consciousness.The preface introduces Eliot’s creative process briefly,amplifies the tragic consciousness in her fictional world by generalizing the serious moral consideration, combines the criticism to analyse it,and then points out the background and meaning of this paper.The first chapter starts with the surroundings and personal experiences, explains why Eliot’s novels showed thick tragic consciousness.The confused and desolate feeling resulted from reformations and changes in many areas along with Eliot’s special experiences promoted her gloomy writing style. The third section illuminates the character of Eliot’s tragic consciousness and then analyses her personality tragedy and society tragedy.The second chaper analyses how did the writer use symbolism to link the nature and society to the tragic destiny of her characters,reveals the inevitability of their destiny.Then centers on the characters who are probable to make great mistakes,illuminates the tragic ending of their behaviour.The third chaper researches the tragic consciousness from the stand point of succession and devoloping.The destiny conception of ancient Greek influenced George Eliot when she describing the power of natuer and arranging the plots,it also reflected her following to the inexorable law of consequences;The second section represents Eliot’s thought about the industrial civilization, it plundered the nature,changed human’s external environment deeply and influenced their mental condition,so the human relations became unclad monetary relationship, it is the root cause of the alienation people’s tragic experience.The third section compares Eliot’s tragic consciousness with Tomas Hardy’s Pessimism,makes her realistic tragic consciousness clear,then explores the devoloping of the tragic consciousness in the novels of20th century.The conclusion summarizes the whole thesis.George Eliot represents various conflicts in her novels.All of these conflicts like traps that interweaved in the tragic scenes,so the readers realized the author’s sober thought about life and human nature after their sigh.Eliot’s masterpiece expressed a faith to wisdom and sympathy that came from the tragic suffering.The tragic consciousness in her novels is a moral concept that can corroborated her social view and represented her ideality about the duty of novel.
